July Long Weekend Kayak

5.21.
The number of kilometers we kayaked on Monday. One way. Or so our trip calculator estimated.

That means we went over 10 km in just about 2.5 hours. Things are looking up for our 'epic' trip in 4 weeks' time. We'll be going 90 km in about 10 days then. Easy peasy :)

We (Ed, myself, Shaun & Liam) parked at Bayfront, put in, and paddled over to the RBG & followed Grindstone creek until we had no more water deep enough to paddle in. Then we went back :)

As for me, I have a new paddle. And finally, paddling feels easy & comfortable. Yay!

But really, what you all wanted to see was pictures. None of this Emily-talk stuff.

So, without further ado: pictures of our adventures.

The guys on the trip. Excuse the water spot, please?

Gutted old Bug

Water lily - and yes, that's the right angle! Just after taking this shot, a deer poked her head out of the water-side reeds. She was rather startled to see us & so ran off.

About to kayak under one of the RBG's walking trail bridges

Mini-portage!

Feeling a little explorer-ish as I led the pack...

Under fallen trees...

How many turtles? (We'd already scared a few off!)

Yes, we can fit 3 kayaks on my car!

June Cause: Niagara Life Centre

Niagara Life Centre is an organization which is very well rounded, in my opinion. They address the needs of many people, in many circumstances. Quite the feat for an organization which began as a crisis pregnancy centre!  Here's a short excerpt from their history (which began in 1985!) to explain what they're all about in their own words:

"NLC began as a crisis pregnancy centre in response to the plight of young mothers with unplanned pregnancies. The clientele included young women with crisis pregnancies as well as mothers and fathers needing parenting help and emotional support. It was soon realized that those who came for our services had many more issues in their lives including: sexual abuse, addiction, relationship problems, anger, and depression. The Centre therefore, began to provide long-term counseling for the clients emotional, mental, physical and spiritual needs."

There are many different ways to support this great place, and you can check them out here and here.
Monetary donations, prayer, sponsorships, getting involved in fundraisers - all are means of reaching out to those who often cannot otherwise help themselves.

Two weekends ago, Niagara Life Centre had a booth at the Joyful Noise concert which I blogged about here. During a break between musicians, one lady who had been helped by the Centre came up to speak about what the centre had done for her. She struggled with many things:  coming from a broken family, an eating disorder, a birth-related disability, depression - all connected. And her praise for this Centre and her love for God and his influence on her life through the Centre was beautiful and moving.

So...how can you help?

** this became one of my five "extra" causes to donate to this year!

Summer List

How many times can I use the word summer in a blog post title in one month?

I'll let you count.

This post is all about my summer list.

Many of these things are already on my  2012 bucket list such as:
  • Finish reading 3 devo books
  • Move to Hamilton
    • already packing!
  • Paint my huge canvas
    • It's been started...
  • Visit three national parks
    • Kayak trip to Pukaskwa at the end of July!
  • Try 26 new recipes this year
    • work in progress...
  • Finish 2 DIY projects
    • already done, but: more to come!
But a few other buckety-sort things I'd like to do would be:

  1. Go antiques-looking. Probably don't have room for much but....
  2. Ed says I have to add "spend time with Ed." (I thought that was a given...)
  3. Read 3 good books.
  4. Combine the above with a trip to the Christian bookstore.
  5. Start the Bookery - where I review old children's books that made my childhood happier :)
  6. Go up the CN tower. Can you believe that I've lived an hour away from TO my entire life & never done that?
  7. Visit another national park. Point Pelee & St Lawrence Islands are the popular choices...
  8.  Do 5 pull-ups in a row. Ed says I need to add this too. Hmm. (Apparently he "has my best interests at heart.")
  9. Go to the zoo!
  10. Blog enough for each month! That's ALWAYS a challenge in the summer. Since there are so many exciting things going on, and very little time to blog them in.

I can't wait to get started :) And beware, I might add things as the summer continues. Like, go camping.

Um...I think you actually need just ONE more. And then, that'll do the trick...

A Joyful Noise!

Last Saturday, I headed out to my favourite waterfront park with friends to enjoy a day of Christian music - free! The concert was called "A Joyful Noise" and this theme came from Psalm 98 - one of my favourites.

It was a gorgeous, warm, sunny day:

Mandy, myself, Alyssa T enjoying some rays :)

Adam was there too! It was like a mini-KY reunion :)

Kevin - Lake Ontario was actually quite warm!

Hillside seating, & vendor booths

Stage & sound booth

Gorgeous sunset - it kept changing!

Music's still goin' on!

NewWorldSon - got the crowd moving!

Still the same sun setting :)

Rink came! Yay!

DIY: Pin-Board Frames!

So today, I finished at school.

By 2 pm I was in paint clothes, and inspired.

  • Out came multiple cans of spray paint, as well as some tubes of acrylic and a paint brush out of my art supplies.
  • Spray paint, dry, spray paint, dry.
  • Paint the nightstand (you'll see it when it's all done.)
  • Spray paint, dry, spray paint, dry.
  • Paint the bookshelf. One coat to go!
  • Pull out the box of fabric scraps.
  • Raid the ribbon drawer.
  • Grab some foam sheets out of my arts & crafts bucket.
  • Scissors & fabric glue out of my sewing kit.
  • Scotch tape out of the gift wrap container.

And this is the result: Mini Framed Pinboards!!

These are gonna hang on the wall in my new place. Just like this.

Summer!

So. Today as of 1pm or so, I was out of school. Out for the summer!

I went home. And painted. Images to come.

I also packed. More images to come.

Is it crazy that in 2-ish weeks I will be living elsewhere???? I've been here for three years. I'll miss this place, but OH MAN am I excited to move into the Ricebox with the other girls. Oh, and conveniently live 5 minutes' walk from Ed. That`s pretty good too.

Now, please excuse me, I`m gonna go see if I can do another coat yet. And then I`m going to pack more boxes. Ok? Ok.
