Market Day!

When I was a kid, we'd head on up to St Jacob's Farmer's Market about once or twice a summer.

Usually, we'd head out with my mom's parents. We'd wander the buildings and the outside vendors, eat samples from everywhere (maybe sometimes twice?) Each of us kids would have a couple of dollars to spend and we'd agonize over which bag of candy we would get at the "candy man's" stall, before heading over to the vendors who sold little toys and trinkets. Grandma and Grandpa would often slip us another dollar or two to get an extra treat, or to buy that toy we'd been eying.

One time Grandpa treated us to ice cream from the Ice Cream Caboose ( a real old caboose!) I chose bubble gum against my mother's recommendation. It was cuz she knew I wouldn't eat it all & then she'd be stuck trying to finish the blue stuff I had left. Because you just don't let stuff like that go to waste! (Sorry, Mom. Next time I'd definitely choose a nice maple walnut or some such. But....there probably wouldn't be leftovers...)

Usually I tried to make my candy last and last and last. A little like Mary from the Little House in the Big Woods book. My brothers would gobble theirs down like Laura.

One time, I bought myself a grape-flavoured glittery lip balm that had a bit of colour. I loved that tube. One day I accidentally left it in the girls' bathroom at school and never found it back. I can't remember if I shed a tear or not, but I felt sad over it. It was the closest thing to make-up I had at the time. And at that age, make-up was forbidden and pretty special.

Grandma and Grandpa usually treated us to a pony ride. I have an old photo of me on a pony, in a dress my mom or grandma made for me, wearing my hair short. I was pretty cute. They still have pony rides there.

Mom always bought bushels of beans at the market, and we'd come home and snap the beans mom and Grandma tipped. Then they'd can them and we'd eat those beans all winter long. I still don't do store-bought canned beans. Home-made beats all.

Another highlight was seeing the animals in the auction barn. You can walk over top on the viewing decks. Usually there were just cows and calves. Sometimes you'd see sheep or pigs or goats. And, very rarely horses. I was one of those kids that just adored horses. I hoped every time that I'd see some.

Well. Last Tuesday, Ed & I visited the market with my parents. We wandered the vendors, inside & out, tasted samples and bought some food.

But the auction barn viewing. The little girl inside of me was absolutely thrilled. Not just cows, calves, sheep, and goats, but HORSES too! And lots of them. There were even a couple of llamas! We probably spent a good half hour in there, jut watching them all. Cows getting checked & tagged, making sure everyone knew about their indignation. Horses nipping at their llama neighbours, no love lost between them. A little white goat sneaking through the bars, first in with the woolly sheep before getting himself lost in a pen of cows who quickly grew irritated with him. Even the curious little thing himself looked relieved to finally get out of there. Cows making a bolt for it and the handlers chasing them down with shouts and shepherding stick taps on the rump.

You could say it was a successful day - made even more successful by the company and finished off with a good lunch of kibbeling and chips - as close to market-fresh-in-the-Netherlands as it gets in southern Ontario.

And, in case you wanted to see what we saw, here are some [blurry] pictures:

Ed & Dad watching the cows get checked & tagged (Well, Ed was watching the cows...)

Sheep & goats, the other pictures didn't turn out so well :(

Perfectly form, dusty spider web. The place is full of cobwebs, but not usually as perfect as this!
So, in case you live in the area, or are visiting it, and want a great day out - also with the kids - try this place!

Bucket List: CN Tower

I made a bucket list for this summer. It's kind of a big deal. Not because there's a lot to do. There isn't. But, because I don't have much time. See last post.

  • I've spent a lot of time with Ed already, so check.
  • I've gone to the Christian bookstore & read more than three books. But mostly they were 'fluffy' novels. Check. And, not quite check.

But my favourite so far? Going up the CN Tower!!!!!

For many tourists, this is a pretty big deal. But.....I'm not a tourist.

I have lived an hour's drive from the tower my ENTIRE life. On a clear day, I could see it from my grandparent's front window, across the lake. So last Monday, I went with Ed, who comes from Australia, and who had already 'been there, done that.'

We had lunch while watching the view. The nice thing is, when you buy lunch, you get your ride up for free. Sweet deal!

Enough chatter now: photo time!

The upper half

View 1 from the restaurant

Appetizer: Tomato Salad with baked cheese of some sort. My favourite part!

View 2: Financial district, I believe.

:)

View 3

Ed's min course: Mushroom Linguini

Can ya spot the kayaks? And yeah, we need rain.

Dessert: almost too pretty to eat!

Back in Time

We go back in time to view a few park pictures. Remember the last park pictures I posted with Serena? That was Friday night, this was Saturday.

We splurged on Wendy's for lunch, and brought it to a bench by the riverside to eat. We also fed some ducks & geese who were there, but were interrupted soon after by a strange lady. I'm still not convinced that she was all there... It was rather awkward. She chatted to us, tried to tell Serena's "mommy" how to take the best care of her (yes, she was referring to me), and wanted a hug from Serry. How do you deal with that? We finished up lunch as quick as we could and then removed ourselves to play at the playground.

I realised after that I probably could have just gently explained that Ser wasn't allowed to be so friendly with strangers (somehow.) Anyways, with that awkward moment of the day over, we had fun. Plenty of baby geese for Serry to 'ooh' & 'ahh' over, a slide, a swing, a bridge...

It was beautiful & fun.

Can you spot the butterfly?

Goose family in front of the bridge which Serry ran over a few times....

Swinging!

Episode 3..."Cake" coming up next...

And the Blue Jays win!

I grew up hearing about the Toronto Blue Jays, recognizing their logo from the t-shirts, ball caps, and banners that my older brothers had around the house.

I also played baseball - at school, at home. Spring had sprung when you could take a bat outside and send a ball whizzing across the still-brown grass towards the little lumps of dirty snow still left in the field. My best hit of the season always happened that first day.

I attended a ball game out in the Dominican Republic with my service team back in 2009, but this was my first real-live Jays game. And they won! They made those last few innings very exciting to watch.

Oh, and I think after that one game, Ed might know the rules of baseball better than I do. Must be a guy thing to catch on so quick....

Oh, and why were we there, might you ask? My staff decided that a ball game would be a great year-end staff social. It was. Dinner afterwards was fun too - a more relaxed setting in which to talk shop :)

In the Roger's Centre - Jays up to bat.

Lawrie up at bat - Jays logo backing him up :)

Blue Jays win! (says the running banner on either side)

First Paddle of the Season!

Easter weekend was the perfect chance for Ed & I to take out our kayaks for the first time. We were joined by Joel, Etta & Shaun in the two kayaks Etta brought along.

Saturday morning was sunny, just a wee bit breezy, and perfect for a paddle! The water wasn't even that cold, amazingly.

My boat! See the others way off in the distance?

Ed enjoying his boat

Yay, my boat!

On-water group :)

Everybody and/or their kayak is in this one. Can you spot them all?

Stopping on a little island

Love this girl :)

Warm enough to wade around & enjoy it!

An Easter Holiday

Here I am.
I'm smelly (like smoke & a beginning-of-season cottage) and itchy and my hair is limp and tangled and, let's face it: disgusting.
But, I'm also rested, relaxed, and so glad to have spent the celebration of my Lord's death and resurrection with a good group of friends (old & new) in the midst of yet another part of God's glorious creation.

Here's a summary of our holiday:

Friday:
  1. Shaun, Joel, Kim, Sandra & Ed arrive at mine & help pack my stuff into our two vehicles.
  2. Stop at Reinink's to pick up Etta; help her put two kayaks on her car.

  5. Eat Joel's spaghetti dinner.
  6. Walk down to the beach to watch the sun set.

  2. Omelette breakfast by Ed.
  3. Morning kayak to the islands with Ed, Shaun, Etta & Joel (Ed & I try out our kayaks for the first time!)

Now I'm going to shower. This will be edited with pictures soon. For now: it is being posted as-is.

As I Sit

I'm eating a large salad. I think it's meant as an appetizer for 4, but it makes a good quick dinner for one. Pumpkin Harvest, it's called. Pretty good till you reach the last bit. By then, you're over the flavour.

I'm also preparing to dash off to get my tax return all done up for me. Here's to hoping I get something back this year!

But in the few minutes I have left to finish my salad-accompanying chocolate milk, here's a quick recap of my weekend.
  1. It was awesome.
  2. I spent too much money.
  3. It rained.
  4. I got to spend the entire day with a favourite person of mine.
  5. We watched the Saturday line-up of videos on the Banff Mountain Film Festival world tour. It was relly cool.
  6. We visited my family on Sunday.
  7. It was awesome.
This, is an awful picture of us. But, there was wind & rain, so it was a one-taker.

The "combination plate" to share, for dinner. Hummus, Israel salad, tabbouleh, falafel, hummus.

Sitting in the theatre at intermission. We had the best seats in the house :)
My chocolate milk is still not done....
